Do we want to do this?
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:57:07 AM »
At the last HAF Chat, somehow the topic evolved that we get involved as a group with a charity.  The ideal would be an auction.  HAF has already offered to host it on this website, but it would probably be easier if we could participate in a charity's existing event because that way they would do all the work.  And it would be good promotion for all of us.

I've been talking with a couple of charities, and of course, they would love to raise some money.  But before I go any further, and start committing us, are we really interested in pursuing this? Are there enough of us willing to donate an item to be auctioned for a charitable cause?  The charities which I've contacted are St. Jude's (children's hospital) and Operation Homefront (supports the families of deployed service men and women).  Is there a different charitable group we'd like to support?

Would we just each donate an item? Would there be a $$ minimum expected? (Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to donate much)

I would be involved if the charity was St. Jude's, because of the percentage of donated money that goes directly to the care of the children and not to overhead ...

Whatever Charity we support lets do a little research on them. I've heard some very disturbing things lately about very prominent national charities. Not happy with their money management. It really opened my eyes to how much of a scam some charities are.
I know our forum is worldwide so to speak but I would be more inclined to support a very small charity in someones backyard than a large national charity.
My 2 cents.

True.  And personally, I'm more a proponent of the kid and animal charities than anything else.  Or cancer-related, IF they're not ones that have gotten in trouble for having zillion dollar salaries and just pennies going to actual research & treatment.  Well, and obviously I also do the MS Walk every spring.

I would certainly donate something. I do agree with Andrew that we MUST research whatever charity we choose. Personally we are very selective about who gets donations anymore. Globally would be better I think.
Maybe: Artists for Peace and Justice

Habitat For Humanity

These are only a couple of suggestions. I'm sure others will have some different ones.

First of all, I am NOT disagreeing with Teresa, or her selections because hafteam is international. Without going into a politcal sorta rant, and while I realize that Hafteam is international,   I would rather see my donated piece go to help someone is THIS country, meaning the US. Some may see this as selfish, some may not, but those are my feelings, and I am entitled to them. With that being said, I am sitting this one out. Sorry guys...

I have no issue with giving to charities whatsoever. I made a couple of suggestions and several others have voiced their opinions as well. I think that alone is terrific and we are all entitled to our own views and opinions. I do think that I will sit this out too. I feel it may be very difficult to get everyone to agree without hurt feelings, being upset, etc. I hope you can prove me wrong.

I think the bottom line is that we all do want to do this, but we all want to do it in our own way.  This is great!  This just doesn't seem to be something we can do as a united group, and the last thing any of us needs is an activity that is divisive.

For that reason, I'd like to close this thread.  Thanks to everyone who commented.
