Vintage Syle Quilt
« on: July 05, 2010, 01:44:18 PM »
In the old days, quilts were made by firelight out of what you had.  I am working on a baby quilt and attempting to capture that heirloom quality.  So this one's got no trees or trucks or embroidery...  just hundreds of tiny pieces of fabric.  It measures 36 x 40 inches (90 x 101 cm).  My question is....  what kind of price do I put on this?  It's not my usual 'art quilt,' so I'm not sure where to go.  What price might you expect to see?  The picture below shows only about 20% of the whole quilt, but I wanted to give you the detail.  Sorry for the shadows....

It looks cute! ^-^ As far as pricing goes, that's hard to say. It might not look the same as your other quilts, but you still put a ton of time and effort into making it. I'd probably price it about the same, although you could make it a little less if you put less time into it. I wouldn't necessarily price it less because they're extra pieces of fabric you had lying around, since you did pay for those pieces at some point in their life. :P

OMG Sandi, that is so much more beautiful than so many of the baby things you can find in stores.

I'm sorry, I'm of absolutely no help when it comes to pricing this kind of art, but it seems to me that it would be of considerable value to anyone seeking a gorgeous handmade quilt for their newborn baby girl ...

Amazing job, my friend.  :)

Thanks to everyone for the input!  I am tickled with the comment about fabric I had being purchased at some point...  This is all new material for this quilt!  I was trying to capture that old-fashioned feel... guess I did it!  THANK YOU!

Just wanted to add something about the pricing… Quilting if done by hand is priceless…. Quilting done by machine is priceless as well.

Hi Sandi, and BEAUTIFUL! I am no quilter, but I can run a sewing machine like nobody's business. I do NOT do any custom sewing for cheap, and my first question would be, is this HAND or machine quilted? I am not sure as to how you have your other quilts priced, but your work is fabulous, so don't undersell yourself. If it were me, I would price it at no less than $150. Bare minimums, and that might be too cheap. Let me go take a peek at your shop(s), and I will check in later.  :D

Let me change that pricing to $225, or more. Your hand quilting takes time, and that is worth something. It took me awhile to get that into my head. Your pattern looks like a Lincoln Log, am I right? They are still very much sought after, even though it's a new-not-vintage quilt, and you have the heirloom look you're after down pat. That's ALOT of tiny pieces to sew together by hand. And don't forget too that grandma's and Mom's will give almost insane prices for items for their kids, or grand-yummies. One little girl is going to be very lucky to get that quilt. Get paid for your work.  :D

It is hand-quilted... all my quilts are.  I assemble/applique by machine, but embroider, quilt by hand.  Hubby thinks I am nuts... he may be right!

LOL I really enjoy hand-sewing! Same way I love writing with pen and paper, rather than using electronics. I enjoy being as hands-on as possible.

Naw, you're not nuts, you just love what you do!  ;D

I made a Raggedy Ann doll a few years back, and looking at your dolls in your shop made me think of the one I made. After doing the yarn hair on her, stitch by stitch, and she had a full head of hair, I swore I wouldn't make another one for under $40. Just doing the hair is worth that, LOL!

as far as actual price goes, not much help there, but yeah if you're handquilting this, I personally think it's worth much more!
I started a quilt about 4 yrs (more actually) ago for my grandson - twinbed size, it's still in the works!  Have finished some baby ones both hand and machine done - machine quilting is faster but I love handquilting them!
It's really very lovely and you got the vintage look perfect!

Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous, it's not easy to put a price on something that has obviously taken many hours to complete, however I guess the only way is to put a price on your time and the cost of the materials.

Bespoke costs and those who truly appreciate hand made quality items won't object to paying $150 or £100.
