Precious Metals vs Base Metals
« on: December 22, 2009, 05:16:00 PM »
I love using precious metals in my designs (sterling, 14K gold filled & vermeil), but I have found the online customers rarely want to pay extra for these metals.  What metal gives you the most sales?

 ;)

Hi RD!  I prefer to keep my prices reasonable by using plated metals!  I refuse to use "toned"!  I like to offer swarovski crystals & gemstones paired with plated gold/silver & copper/Brass in an effort to make the nicer things more affordable, but I will NOT use "Toned" metals! Aprilee

I've used plated metals, brass and sterling, and I've sold a little of each, so I don't think I have a clear winner there. I can't afford to use gold, so I don't know if it would sell in my shop or not ...

I really like using Sterling Silver, and to keep costs down, I also use seed beads and the tiniest Hill Tribe spacers as accents to my semiprecious gemstones in my bracelets.

I work with a rather wide range of metals.  I've used Gold-filled, sterling silver, copper, enameled copper, brass, aluminum, anodized aluminum, and stainless steel.  I've sold the most pieces in enameled copper, whether the piece is solid enameled copper or mixed with some other metal.

We work with mainly Sterling but I also like to work with copper. It really is a matter of finding the right customer base; we have sold quite a bit of sterling on line.
